What 49 electrolyte labels say and what a gram of sodium costs
The labels of 49 published electrolyte products from 21 brands, as two independent readers transcribed them, priced at the brands’ own stores. What a gram of sodium costs across the shelf, how that changes with size, how much sodium, potassium and magnesium a serving states, how sodium compares with potassium on the same label, and what the sugar and blend rows show.

Cost per gram of sodium
Each label’s figure is the one the electrolytes ranking prints: its lowest price per serving among the sizes in stock at the brand’s own store, up to 5 kg, divided by the grams of sodium a serving states. 47 of the 49 labels (96%) have one; the rest had no in-stock size up to 5 kg with a servings count on the day prices were read.
Across those 47, the median is $4.54 per gram of sodium. The middle half runs from $2.41 (lower quartile) to $8.33 (upper quartile): a quarter of the 47 cost less than $2.41 a gram and a quarter more than $8.33.

Flavours count separately. Each flavour with its own label is its own record here. Of the 11 brands with two or more priced labels, 2 price all of them at one price per serving, so a brand with many labels weighs more in these medians: the most labels from one brand is 9 of the 49. Counting each brand once instead (the median of each brand’s own median), the median across the 20 brands with a cost per gram is $3.72 per gram of sodium.
Why sodium. The ranking prices this shelf on sodium alone, not on the total of every mineral: sodium is the mineral these labels state most consistently (below), so the figure compares like with like. Pricing on sodium does not say the minerals substitute for one another. The electrolyte label guide walks through the arithmetic with a worked example.
Size and cost per gram
The same product, in different sizes. A product’s sodium per serving is the same in every size, so a size is measured here in the servings it holds. 24 of the 49 products have a priced size whose servings the store’s option itself states, by weight or as a servings count, 38 sizes in all.
10 of those 24 products are priced in two or more sizes. In 10 of those 10 (100%) the largest size costs less per gram of sodium than the smallest; in 0 it costs the same, and in 0 more. The median difference is 31% less per gram at the largest size than at the smallest.
| At the largest size, against the smallest | Products (out of 10) |
|---|---|
| Costs less per gram of sodium | 10 |
| Costs the same per gram (to $0.0001) | 0 |
| Costs more per gram of sodium | 0 |
A size is one priced option of one product, in stock at the brand’s store and up to 5 kg, whose servings come from the option itself: its weight over the label’s serving weight or the servings count it states. Options counted in sticks, tablets or capsules or by a bare number, and sizes priced on the label’s own servings per container, are left out of this section. Two options within 5% of each other’s servings are one size, at its lowest cost per gram: the same tub is often listed in several flavours.
Sodium, potassium and magnesium per serving
49 of the 49 labels state sodium as a number; across those 49, the median is 150 mg a serving, and the figures run from 55 mg to 1,200 mg. A serving is whatever the label calls one, a scoop, a stick or a number of tablets, so a price per serving compares unlike amounts of sodium; cost per gram of sodium divides that difference out. The site’s reference recognises sodium, potassium and magnesium and gives none of them a threshold (how we rate), so no label here is marked as meeting or missing a dose; the amounts are described as printed.
The same figures as a table
| Sodium per serving | Labels | Share of 49 |
|---|---|---|
| under 100 mg | 11 | 22% |
| 100 mg to under 200 mg | 19 | 39% |
| 200 mg to under 400 mg | 8 | 16% |
| 400 mg to under 800 mg | 8 | 16% |
| 800 mg or more | 3 | 6% |
Which minerals a label states. A mineral counts as stated when the label gives it as a number: its nutrient line, or, for sodium, potassium and magnesium, a row the panel doses outside a blend, as the electrolyte label guide counts them. 42 of the 49 labels (86%) state all three of sodium, potassium and magnesium. A label can be in more than one row of this table:
| Mineral | Labels stating it (out of 49) | Share of 49 |
|---|---|---|
| Sodium | 49 | 100% |
| Potassium | 48 | 98% |
| Magnesium | 42 | 86% |
| Chloride | 29 | 59% |
| Calcium | 40 | 82% |
| Sodium, potassium and magnesium, all three | 42 | 86% |
Amounts. Potassium and magnesium amounts are taken from the panel’s potassium and magnesium lines only. A row named for a salt, such as potassium citrate, carries the weight of the whole compound, not of the mineral in it, so it is never used as a mineral amount.
| Per serving | Labels with an amount (out of 49) | Median | Lowest to highest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sodium | 49 | 150 mg | 55 mg to 1,200 mg |
| Potassium (the potassium line) | 47 | 260 mg | 48 mg to 500 mg |
| Magnesium (the magnesium line) | 41 | 83 mg | 15 mg to 140 mg |
Sodium against potassium
A label’s sodium divided by its potassium, both in milligrams as the panel states them: how many milligrams of sodium come with each milligram of potassium. 47 of the 49 labels state both; across those 47, the median is 0.58, and the middle half runs from 0.40 to 1.67. 20 of the 47 (43%) state more sodium than potassium, 25 of the 47 (53%) more potassium than sodium, and 2 the same amount of each. The ratio describes the label’s arithmetic only; it is not a score and not a target.
The same figures as a table
| Milligrams of sodium per milligram of potassium | Labels | Share of 47 |
|---|---|---|
| under 0.5 | 19 | 40% |
| 0.5 to under 1 | 6 | 13% |
| 1 to under 2 | 12 | 26% |
| 2 or more | 10 | 21% |
Sugar per serving
28 of the 49 labels carry a sugar amount in the label data; across those 28, the median is 0 g. 16 of the 49 (33%) state 0 g, 12 of the 49 state more than 0 g, and 21 of the 49 (43%) have no sugar row in the label data. A label with no sugar row is counted as carrying no amount, never as 0 g.
| Sugar per serving | Labels | Share of 28 with an amount |
|---|---|---|
| 0 g | 16 | 57% |
| more than 0 g, under 5 g | 9 | 32% |
| 5 g or more | 3 | 11% |
Blend rows with no amount
6 of the 49 labels (12%) print at least one row inside a blend with no amount of its own. A blend member with no amount contributes nothing to any figure here, and a blend’s total is never divided among its members. How blends are read: proprietary blends.
Price per serving
The median price per serving is $0.825, across the 47 of the 49 labels with an in-stock price at the brand’s own store and a servings count: each label’s lowest price per serving among the same sizes its cost per gram is priced from. Servings state different amounts of sodium (55 mg to 1,200 mg here), so cost per gram of sodium is the figure that compares across them.
How to compare electrolyte costs and labels
- Price the sodium, not the tub. Divide the price by the servings the size states, then by the grams of sodium a serving states. That gives the cost per gram of sodium, which compares across scoops, sticks and tablets.
- Check what a serving holds. The labels here state 55 mg to 1,200 mg of sodium a serving (median 150 mg), so two prices per serving can buy very different amounts of sodium.
- Compare sizes of the same product. In 10 of the 10 products sold in more than one size, the largest cost less per gram of sodium. Use the servings each size states, not the servings on another size’s label.
- Read the mineral lines, not the salt rows. A row named for a salt, such as sodium citrate, gives the weight of the compound; the sodium, potassium and magnesium lines give the minerals.
- Read the sugar row. 16 of the 49 labels state 0 g of sugar and 12 of the 49 more than 0 g; 21 of the 49 have no sugar row in the label data.
- Read the facts panel, not the front of the pack. Every figure here comes from the label’s panel and the brand’s own store; a callout on the front of a pack is never used as data.
- Note the date. Store prices change; each figure here is from the day it was read.
A longer walk-through of the label and the arithmetic: reading an electrolyte label. The shelf ordered on cost per gram of sodium: budget electrolytes.
How we computed this
- Records. The 49 of the 49 published electrolyte records whose labels were read by two independent readers (what “verified” means). On 2 of them the first two readings differed, and a third reading agreed with one of them. None of the 49 is left out: no published electrolyte record was parsed from a brand’s nutrition table. The 49 studied are records the electrolytes ranking lists, from 21 brands: 1st Phorm, Ascent Protein, EVL Nutrition, Ghost, Horbaach, Huge Supplements, Jacked Factory, Jocko Fuel, Kaged, Key Nutrients, Momentous, Naked Nutrition, Nutricost, Optimum Nutrition, PEScience, Redcon1, Rule 1 Proteins, RYSE, Skratch Labs, Transparent Labs, Ultima Replenisher.
- Cost per gram of sodium. As the ranking computes it (how we rate): the lowest price per serving among the in-stock sizes, divided by the grams of sodium per serving on the label. Sizes over 5 kg are not used.
- Sodium. The panel’s sodium line; only where the label data has none, a sodium row the panel doses outside a blend.
- Shared counts. The minerals stated, the sodium median and range, the blend rows, the sugar rows and the cost per gram median are counted by the same code as the electrolyte label guide, over the labels studied here.
- Panel figures. The amounts two readings agreed on, as the product page prints them. A row with no agreed amount is counted as carrying none, never estimated, and a percentage of Daily Value is never turned back into milligrams.
- Prices. Only from the brand’s own store, read on the dates above. No retail-listing price is used.
- Arithmetic. Shares are rounded to the nearest whole percent, and each states what it is a share of. The median of an even count is the mean of the middle two; the quartiles are the medians of the lower and upper halves of the sorted figures, the middle figure of an odd count left out of both. Costs per gram print to the cent, or to the tenth of a cent under $1, as the ranking prints them; ratios print to two decimals. A figure that cannot be computed is printed as “not enough data”, never estimated.
- Regenerated. The page is rebuilt from the records with the rest of the site, so its figures move as labels and prices are re-read. Errors we find are logged on corrections.
