How to Read a Supplement Facts Panel

A supplement facts panel is a legal document before it is a marketing tool. It has to disclose certain things in a certain format, and it is allowed to stay silent about others. Knowing which is which is most of what you need to read one correctly.

Serving size is not the amount you'll actually take

Every panel starts with two numbers that people skim past: serving size and servings per container. Serving size is how much of the product the manufacturer defines as "one serving" — one scoop, two capsules, one bar. Servings per container is how many of those the package holds.

Neither number is regulated by what's typical or what works. A brand can define a serving as a small scoop specifically because it makes the protein-per-serving or dose-per-serving numbers look better on the front of the package, while the actual recommended use — printed elsewhere, or implied by the product category — takes two.

This matters most when you're comparing two products by their front-of-package claims. "25g protein per serving" tells you nothing until you know the serving size and whether that serving is what people actually use. A tub that defines its serving as a heaping scoop and a tub that defines its serving as a level scoop can carry identical protein-per-serving claims while holding meaningfully different amounts of actual protein per container, because the servings-per-container number moves to compensate.

Why "per serving" hides the real cost

Price is quoted per package, but value is per unit of what you're actually buying — the protein, the dose, the calorie. A panel gives you the raw material to do that math, but it will never do it for you, because the arithmetic usually favors whichever product looks worse on price.

Take two protein powders. One costs $39.99 for a tub with 30 servings at 24g of protein each — 720g of protein total, or $0.056 per gram. Another costs $29.99 for a tub with 20 servings at 20g of protein each — 400g of protein total, or $0.075 per gram. The second tub is cheaper on the shelf and more expensive per gram of what you're actually paying for. Nothing on either label states this. It only shows up once you multiply servings by protein-per-serving and divide price by the result.

The same logic applies to any dosed ingredient — creatine, caffeine, a pre-workout blend — and it applies harder to snack and bar categories, where count packaging (a box of 12, a box of 6) adds a layer of obfuscation on top of serving size.

%DV: measured against a different goal than yours

Percent Daily Value (%DV) tells you what fraction of a general nutritional reference intake one serving provides — for things like sodium, calcium, or vitamin D, where a government-set reference intake exists. It does not exist for most of the ingredients that matter in a sports supplement, because there is no established Daily Value for citrulline malate or beta-alanine. When you see %DV on a panel, it's telling you about basic nutrients, not about whether an active ingredient is dosed at a level that matches the research behind it. A high %DV on sodium is a fact about sodium; it says nothing about whether the caffeine two lines down is dosed anywhere near what a study used.

What the panel must disclose

By law, a supplement facts panel must list every ingredient, in descending order by weight, and it must state the amount of each ingredient that is dosed individually — a named amount in milligrams or grams, not a range, not a vague claim.

What it's allowed to hide: proprietary blends

The one major exception is the proprietary blend. A manufacturer can group several ingredients under a single blend name — "Focus Complex," "Pump Matrix" — and disclose only the blend's total weight, not the individual amounts inside it. This is legal. It also means that anything inside a blend has no disclosed per-ingredient dose, and there is no way for a reader to know from the label alone whether the headline ingredient is present at a meaningful amount or a token one. We cover this in more depth in the proprietary blends guide — the short version is that a blend's total weight sets a hard ceiling on what any one ingredient inside it can be, and that ceiling is frequently well under a clinically studied dose.

The panel also isn't required to disclose flavoring agents, colors below a certain threshold, or processing aids in the same itemized way as active ingredients — these usually appear in a separate "other ingredients" line without individual amounts, which is normal and not a red flag by itself.

Reading order that actually works

1. Serving size and servings per container first — this sets the denominator for every other number.

2. Total package weight or count, so you can compute a per-gram or per-dose cost.

3. Each individually disclosed ingredient and its amount, in the order listed — order is required to follow descending weight, which is itself informative.

4. Anything inside a proprietary blend, treated as undisclosed rather than assumed adequate.

5. %DV only for the handful of nutrients it actually applies to — don't read it as a proxy for "how much of this is in here."

None of this requires special knowledge. It requires doing the division the label doesn't do for you, and treating "not disclosed" as exactly that rather than filling in an assumption.
