Proprietary Blends — What They Hide and Why It Matters

A proprietary blend is a legal way to list ingredients without stating how much of each one is actually in the product. It's the single biggest gap between what a label shows and what a label proves, and it's worth understanding the mechanics precisely rather than treating every blend as a red flag on sight.

The mechanics

A supplement facts panel is normally required to disclose the individual amount of each active ingredient. A proprietary blend is the exception: a manufacturer can group several ingredients under one name — "Pump Complex," "Energy Matrix" — and disclose only the total weight of the blend, not how that weight is divided among the ingredients inside it. The ingredients still have to be listed in descending order by weight, which gives you some information about relative proportion, but not an actual number for any one of them.

This matters because "descending order" tells you rank, not scale. An ingredient list of caffeine, beta-alanine, L-citrulline could mean caffeine makes up 90% of the blend and the rest are trace amounts, or it could mean the three are close to evenly split. From the order alone, both are consistent with the label.

A worked example: 750 mg can't hold a clinical dose

Say a pre-workout lists a "Focus & Pump Complex — 750 mg" containing, in order, citrulline malate, beta-alanine, and taurine.

The clinical dose for citrulline malate 2:1 is 8,000 mg — established in Perez-Guisado & Jakeman, J Strength Cond Res 2010. The entire blend here is 750 mg, and it has to be split across three ingredients, not just one. Even in the most generous possible reading — where citrulline malate is effectively the entire blend and the other two listed ingredients are present at only trace amounts — 750 mg is still less than a tenth of the 8,000 mg dose the research behind citrulline malate actually used. There's no arrangement of three ingredients inside a 750 mg total that gets any single one of them anywhere near a clinical dose that itself requires several grams.

This is the useful test whenever you see a blend: take its total weight, and ask whether that weight could plausibly contain a clinical dose of the ingredient listed first — the one presumably present in the largest amount. If the blend's total is smaller than the clinical dose of its own headline ingredient, the label has already told you, through simple arithmetic, that the dose can't be there. No lab test is needed to know that; it's just the total weight compared against a published threshold, the same kind of comparison we walk through in our clinical doses guide.

Why a blend is not automatically bad

This deserves equal weight to the example above, because it's just as true: a proprietary blend is not, by itself, evidence that a product is underdosed or dishonest.

Some formulas genuinely rely on several ingredients that don't individually need to hit a single "clinical dose" to serve their function — flavoring aids, minor cofactors, or ingredients used in combination at doses smaller than any one study of that ingredient in isolation. A blend can also legitimately contain a full clinical dose of its lead ingredient if the total weight supports it; a 10,000 mg blend built around 8,000+ mg of citrulline malate with a couple of smaller supporting ingredients is arithmetically plausible in a way a 750 mg blend making the same implicit claim is not. The problem isn't blending as a practice — it's that a blend, by design, removes the reader's ability to check the claim at all, which is why it's scored as undosed rather than assumed adequate, rather than being treated as automatically disqualifying.

That gap is the whole reason disclosed, individually dosed ingredients are worth more than a blend claiming the same total weight. It isn't that a blend is guilty until proven innocent — it's that a blend, structurally, can't be checked the way a disclosed dose can, and the honest response to that is to say so rather than to assume the best case on the reader's behalf.

What disclosure costs a brand, and why some skip it

Disclosing individual doses is a competitive risk in a way that a blend total isn't. If a brand states "Beta-Alanine — 1,600 mg" on its panel, a shopper can immediately see that the amount is half the studied maintenance dose and compare it against a competitor's fully dosed product. A blend total sidesteps that specific comparison, because there's no single number to hold up against a threshold. That's a real commercial incentive for using a blend, separate from any question of the product's actual quality — and it's also why full disclosure is treated as informative on its own. A brand willing to print "1,600 mg" instead of folding it into a blend is accepting a comparison it could have avoided, which is a meaningfully different choice than hiding the number entirely.

The one-line test

If a panel lists a blend, the fastest honest check is: total blend weight, divided by the number of ingredients inside it, compared against the clinical dose of whichever ingredient is listed first. It won't tell you the real number — that stays hidden by design — but it will tell you whether the claim is arithmetically possible, which is often enough to know how much weight to put on the front-of-label promise built around that ingredient's name.
